Join your Filipino Young Professionals Cultural Ambassadors of Houston (@FYPCA.HTX) for a fun-filled afternoon of tinikling!

If you’ve ever been to any Filipino or AAPI event, chances are likely you’ve seen dancers beautifully swaying, dancing, and tapping their feet between colorful bamboo poles clapping to the backdrop of elegant rondalla music.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to jump in, move your feet and weave your way around the taps and claps of those bamboo sticks, and *really* experience the joy and thrill of Tinikling?

FYP Cultural Ambassadors of Houston is proud to present our free 2024 Tinikling Workshop, a two-hour in-depth session that teaches you the basics of Tinikling, the traditional Filipino folk dance that involves tapping and clapping in beat with sliding bamboo poles on the ground!

Many beginners often fear the idea of tripping or getting their feet “clapped” by the bamboo sticks, but we promise a safe and fun environment! Learn the background of Tinikling, a repertoire of moves to keep you jumping in and out with style, and experience just why millions of people around the world recognize Tinikling as one of the most popular folk dances of the Philippines!

Best of all, it’s FREE, and no experience is necessary! Come in with a willingness to learn and an eagerness to move, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know with some cool, free swag to remember us by!

Date: June 30, 2024
Time: 2-4pm
Location: Soreal Studios
14520 Memorial Dr APT 59, Houston, TX 77079

Again, ADMISSION IS FREE but registration is strongly encouraged so we can accommodate space for all our attendees!

See y'all there!

This event is funded in part by the Houston Arts Alliance (@houstonartsalliance) and Office of Cultural Affairs (@houstonmoca). Our deepest gratitude goes to them for funding and supporting cultural arts in Houston.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

❓️What exactly is Tinikling?

Tinikling is a popular Filipino folk dance usually performed with two “clappers” tapping poles as one or more dancers hop in and out of the poles!

❓️Whoa, that seems fun, but is it safe?

Just like any dance, it may seem a bit intimidating at first, but with practice anyone can learn Tinikling! We’ll teach you the concepts and basic steps without clapping the sticks first and ensure students are never pushed beyond what they’re comfortable with to ensure a safe and fun learning environment for everyone involved!

❓️Can anyone join?

YES, absolutely, and we mean everyone of all experience levels from complete beginner to expert jumper, and you don’t have to be Filipino to participate either! We want to promote a diverse environment and ensure attendees are able to find a deeper understanding and appreciation of our beloved Filipino dance!

❓️What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes are recommended, preferably shorts as well! We don’t recommend baggy clothing that hangs past your ankles, but leggings are okay. Our dancers usually prefer to dance barefoot for safety and stability (please, no socks to prevent slipping!) but we can accommodate you if you would rather dance in some tennis or dance shoes. Also to our long-haired friends, a scrunchie or hair-tie will go a long way, trust us!

❓️Anything else I should bring to the workshop?

Just yourself and a willingness to learn! Water and drinks will be provided at the workshop, but try to eat something light before attending since we’ll be moving and we want to make sure everyone is fully hydrated and energized! Emphasis on “light meal” - save the pancit and lumpia for after! ;)
